About the Artist
The exhibition «We Need Diaghilev» brings together both early 20th century artists — Alexander Benois, Leon Bakst, Konstantin Korovin, Erte, Dobuzhinsky — and contemporary artists — Vadim Tishin, Yuri Cooper, Ekaterina Filippova, Igor Chapurin, Rustam Khandamov, Platon Infante.
Theatre artists who worked with Diaghilev wrote sketches of theatre costumes and scenery and were mostly part of the World of Art association. They were united by their love for Russian culture, its traditions and at the same time their attraction to the new trends of the avant-garde era and experimentation.
The contemporary artists in the exhibition show theatre in a completely new way and work in completely different media. Vadim Tishin is inspired by folk Russian costumes and creates unique dresses printed on fabric. Ekaterina Filippova makes collages using precious jewellery and reflects on contemporary culture. Yuri Cooper turns to new methods of painting and creates his own sfumato technique.
All the artists presented at the exhibition have their own unique style and yet there is a unity between them in the face of the theatre.
